Abbie Cornish a débuté sa carrière de comédienne à 15 ans à la télé australienne. Au cinéma, elle décroche son premier rôle en 2000 dans Cercle Intime, un thriller de Samantha Lang, mais est révélée trois ans plus tard dans Somersault, qui lui vaut un prix de la meilleure actrice de l'Australian Film Institute.
Après avoir tourné avec Ridley Scott (Une Grande Année) ou Shekhar Kapur (Elizabeth : l'âge d'or), elle est choisie par Jane Campion pour interpréter la maîtresse du poète John Keats dans Bright Star, sélectionné au Festival de Cannes 2009.
